Hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving!

After hosting a dinner for 14 of my nearest and dearest last week, complete with all the professional touches (i.e. equipment rentals, off-site cooking, and manicured tablescapes), it's time to share my tips in hopes of keeping us all sane and happy during this often stressful holiday planning season.

   DO's:

  • Do give yourself props for hosting any gathering during this time of year! That being said, have fun with your loved ones, and don't worry about everything being perfect. Plan ahead always, and KISS is my general rule--- keep it simple, sweeties!
  • Do eat what you want, see who you want, and celebrate in your style. The first one is a big consideration with allergies and dietary restrictions. I myself have such concerns, so I offer to cook certain dishes, and I take the extra time and energy to make sure that these things are taken care of (especially if I'm a guest). I like recipes for easy dips and spreads and dishes that can be made ahead of time and simply reheated.

'tis the season:

tips for the HOLIDAY pARTY season

  • Do bring something to a dinner or a party that you will enjoy making or doing. I like bundling up the ingredients for a great cocktail (like cider and cinnamon sticks or infused vodka and a mixer). And I appreciate when guests bring me their favorite plant, savory snack, or bottle of wine. Again, the KISS rule applies to guests.
   DON'Ts:

  • Don't try to host every member of your family and all of their plus one's. It's just too much. Consider keeping it to a certain number, depending on time and space, and what is really practical. With a manageable guest list and a smaller party, you'll be able to enjoy yourself and visit with each one of your guests. After all, the holidays are about spending time with the ones you love.
  • Don't burn-out on the holidays by going to every party that you're invited to.  Prioritizing really makes the holidays more fun for me.
  • Don't assume the party is kid and family-friendly. I have seen this happen, so it's always good to check on this detail in case it's an adults-only mixer.
  • Don't be afraid to use color and have fun with your decor! For Thanksgiving, I bought and made pieces I knew I would use throughout the holidays. I spiced up autumnal oranges and browns with a teal table runner (that will look great with reds for Christmas and metallics for the New Year). And the gourds that I spray painted gold are still adorning our holiday home. I also used leaves from our yard and made cards on my home printer to stay on budget, and to go all-out on our Thanksgiving table!
